This incredible organization helps potential living donors financially, including travel expenses, housing stipends, etc. I, personally, was able to take the necessary recovery time needed because of the financial support of this foundation. Runners who join this group will be staying in elegant New Orleans style, within walking distance of the race start, race expo and a short trolley ride to the French Quarter. Yesterday was one of my favorite races of the year- the Chicago Triathlon. For years I raced this race in my hometown city, but for the past few I have taken off to strictly focus on my athletes. As much as I love to participate, being a coach and spectator is just really rewarding. However, this year with my tight post pregnancy turnaround, I needed a late season race and this one fit the schedule perfectly. So, exactly 3 months and 2 days after Olivia's birthday, I toed the line for the sprint distance race in Chicago. It was a great day for many, myself included. Being so soon after my pregnancy I had a little different attitude going in- I was nervous and excited but also felt way less pressure than I usually do. As a result, I feel like I was able to take in the day and learn a few things. Here are some lessons I took away from yesterday's race:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
1) <b>We all have "stuff" going on.</b> I spent the hour before the start chatting with clients and triathlon friends. A common pre-race conversation is listing the reasons you are not going to have a good race that day. I am no psychologist but I believe it has something to do with giving yourself an out if you don't perform. Yesterday I heard lots of good excuses- just got divorced, starting a new job tomorrow, just moved, injured ankle, and of course mine, just giving birth. Those are all really good excuses to have not put the proper training in for the race. But what I realized is that we ALL have an excuse to not do well. Of course we do! We are adults with families and jobs and non-teenager bodies that are testing ourselves by training for a really hard sport. So we can make all the excuses we want, but the person next to us might have a better one. Let's just be happy we are strong and brave enough to actually attempt the race.</div>

2) <b>Even the most experienced triathlete can make a "rookie" mistake. </b>I made pretty much the dumbest mistake of my triathlon career yesterday. I forgot to put my helmet on in T1. I ran all the way to the bike mount line before an official called it to my attention. I then had to run back in shame to my transition spot to grab my helmet, adding 2-3 minutes to my time in the process. It was dumb, it was embarrassing and it was downright ridiculous. No one I tell can believe that I, Angela Park, 15 year veteran of triathlons and triathlon coach, made such a beginner mistake. But I did and it cost me big time. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>3) You are never too experienced to practice the basics. </b>See above post. In my haste to get back in shape for this race I did not swim in the lake once or practice a swim to bike transition. In fact, I was only able to ride my race bike outside once this entire summer. I took for granted that I had done this enough times and would be fine without doing so. This naiveté cost me an age group win.</div>

<b>4)</b> <b>When you make a mistake, move on and refocus, but learn from it. </b>For a fleeting moment I wanted to throw in the towel after I forgot my helmet. But then I thought about all the people asking me how my race went and I knew I could not tell them I quit. So I ran and grabbed it as quickly as I could, hopped on my bike and proceeded like it never happened. I can assure you, however, that I will never make that mistake again.</div>

<b>5) There is more to racing than a PR or podium finish. </b>There was a time in my triathlon career that doing something like forgetting my helmet would have brought me to tears or caused a tantrum. I really like winning. However yesterday when I was out there I was just so thankful to be racing. Pregnancy was tough for me and there was a time when I thought making a comeback would be impossible. The crowd, the pain, the feeling of being fit enough to participate- I feel the most alive when I finish a race. And I am guessing most people feel that way judging by the buzz at the finish line. We are fit and healthy and strong and taking advantage of this life by living to the fullest. Don't get me wrong, I am super irritated at myself by my mistake, but I am mostly just happy to be back out there racing. And I feel really proud of the example I am setting for my family- my oldest daughter made me the medal pictured above. She is noticing what I am doing and it will influence her for the rest of her life.</div>

<b>6) If you put your mind to it, you can do it. </b>When I was pregnant and told people I planned to do two races within 4 months of having the baby, they looked at me like I was crazy. I even felt a little insane for attempting it. However, from the moment I got pregnant I had a plan. Stay in as good of shape as possible and don't gain too much weight. With my nausea staying in shape was tough but not putting on weight was a breeze. Post pregnancy I planned to start training at 4 weeks and when that day came I did. I ran one mile and could hardly keep a 10 minute pace. It was disheartening but I am proud to say, even through sleep deprivation and all, I managed to get in every single workout I planned in the past 9 weeks. And it was all worth it when I surpassed my own expectations yesterday. Get a plan, stay focused, execute and it will pay off.</div>

<b>7) It is hard to coach and race on the same day at the Chicago Tri. </b>It is a crazy, crowded day and I only saw half of my athletes for bits and pieces. Very hard to focus on your own race along with others. Sorry about that! Next year I will be back in a coaching role and the Spark tent will make it's return :)</div>

Starting Monday, July 6th and wrapping up Sunday, August 9th Coach Angela is challenging you to stay on top of your health and fitness by doing the following things:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>2) Drinking half your bodyweight in ounces of water each day (ie- 140 lb should consume 70 oz)</b></i></div>

<i><b>3) Cutting out ALL soda consumption (diet soda included!)</b></i></div>

<i><b>4) Sleeping 7 hours per night</b></i></div>

racing in Australia and USA non drafting races.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>He was an Australian High School State Champion in Triathlon and 5000
meter Track, with a 5K best time of 15:10 and 10K of 31:55.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As a USA Track and Field Level 1 Certified
Coach with a degree in podiatry, Nigel <span style="background: white;">bring
years of high level running experience along with a deep understanding of human
running bio-mechanics and a sound understanding of the kinds of injuries

Yep, so that's me, Coach Angela. Today. Almost 25 weeks pregnant. Here to talk to you about triathlon and pregnancy- which clearly have nothing in common unless you are a female triathlete of child bearing age. And then they have everything in common.<div>

I have a delightful five year old daughter, Alexandra. My pregnancy with her was a bit of a surprise and for a planner like me, I took that as a blessing. There is never a "best" time to have a child and when you are presented with a positive pregnancy test and just need to start planning your life around the arrival of that little baby, it forces you to be ready. I liked it that way. </div>

On the contrary, when Alex turned 2, and then 3, people were starting to ask me when I was going to have another. Instead I decided to register for an Ironman. Which meant I was putting off getting pregnant til she was almost 4. And then USA Triathlon announced Age Group Nationals was going to be in Milwaukee and 2014 and Age Group Worlds in my hometown of Chicago 2015. And I had to try to qualify, which meant if I did Alex would be 6 before I would be pregnant....you get the point. I could basically put off having another baby forever. </div>

So last August I qualified for Age Group Worlds which will take place in Chicago in September 2015. As I ran my way into the 25th and final qualifying spot I was doing the math in my head. August 2014 to September 2015, that is thirteen months. Gestating a baby only takes 9 right? Maybe I could squeeze this in instead of putting it of. </div>

Lo and behold, within a few weeks of nationals I was pregnant. It was shocking. I had been ready to try for a month or two and then put it off til after Worlds but really did not think I would get pregnant so quickly. But I did. I felt blessed. And determined. Determined to stay in tip top shape throughout my pregnancy so getting ready for Worlds in 4 months would be a piece of cake.</div>

The first few weeks of September were a breeze. The weather was good and I was feeling great- still running, biking and swimming almost everyday. I had plans to run the Vegas Half Marathon in November and was certain I could still do it. </div>

September 27th, 6 weeks into my pregnancy, I ate a kale salad for dinner and have not been the same since. The nausea hit shortly after dinner and lasted until December. I could not look into the fridge or brush my teeth without gagging and I certainly will never be able to eat kale again. I could not make it through a night of sleep without severe nausea, which meant I could hardly drag myself through my morning clients until I could take a nap. The few times I actually worked out during those weeks I still felt like puking the entire time. Not one food sounded appetizing and if I managed to run a few miles my hips would hurt for days after. Not exactly the picture of health I had imagined myself.</div>

The Vegas Half rolled around and I made the trip with several clients. By that time I had no aspiration to run but instead planned to just be a great spectator. Sadly, I ended up in the ER in Vegas the night before the race with severe stomach pain and nausea and slept through most of the runners the next day. Everything turned out fine, but I felt like I had let everyone down. Again, not the picture I had in my head for a trip to Vegas with 15 awesome people. </div>

Since Christmas I have felt better, but nowhere remotely like myself. I do swim a few times a week and lift weights or do the elliptical on other days. But after four months of no running and several extra pounds on my stomach, I don't feel like now is a good time to start hitting the pavement again. Not to mention that leaning over on my bike is now impossible. Staying in tip top shape is no longer my goal- it has been replaced staying sane and not getting huge.</div>

My new little girl is set to arrive at the very end of May, which means after a month off I will have 10-12 weeks to whip myself into shape for Age Group Worlds. Getting the last spot on Team USA means that I have no aspirations to place or break records, but I truly just want to participate in this huge event that will take place in my amazing Chicago. While my previous goal was to have a fantastic race at this event, my new goal is to finish with a respectable time and lose my baby weight by then so I don't look silly in spandex.</div>

Kids change our priorities- in and out of the womb I have learned. I have 15 more weeks left of being pregnant and am getting through it by envisioning snuggling with my new little daughter and then heading out for a run after I put her down for a nap. And let's be honest, following that run up with a glass (or bottle) of wine :)</div>

About one year ago, I wrote <a href="http://sparkmultisport.blogspot.com/2013/08/age-group-nationals-is-it-2014-yet.html">this post</a> about how I was going to focus on competing in Age Group Nationals in Milwaukee in 2014. At that time I was training long for Ironman Wisconsin and didn't think I could do very well in a sprint. I also knew that Nationals was coming back to Milwaukee this year and it was a qualifying race for the World Champs in Chicago 2015. I had to do it. I had to try.<br />
<br />
And frankly, until I arrived in Milwaukee last Friday, I thought it was going to be easy to qualify for Worlds. Sure, a lot of people would show up to try to make it to a World Championship in the US. It would a be a close, affordable option for all of us to be a part of Team USA. But c'mon - the 2013 results made me think I could place close to Top 10, a shoo in considering you only need top 25 in your age group to qualify. <br />
<br />
Then this past weekend finally arrived. I read an article how athletes from all 50 states were competing. Wow. That is cool. I saw MILLIONS of dollars worth of bikes being racked into transition for the races. Hmmm, there are definitely some pretty serious triathletes here. I perused the results of the Olympic distance race Saturday after it was completed. Ummm, are you kidding?! These times are SIGNIFICANTLY faster than last year. <br />
<br />
"I am starting to have doubts," I told Gene and Elisabeth as we sat down for dinner Saturday evening. I know a thing or two about triathlon, and I can turn in a decent time, but I have never been one of those FAST girls that you turn your head at and say "wow." I now realized that all those FAST girls had shown up at this race. Every. Single. One.<br />
<br />
They agreed this was the highest caliber of racing experiences. And they convinced me that if I was really going to make it, I should do it in a race like this. They were right. It would be a truly gratifying experience. If I was going to qualify, it was best if I did it against the best. <br />
<br />
Sunday morning came and I knew I was going to have to give it a valiant effort to make this happen. I was in the first wave of girls and told my spectators to let me know what place I was in coming out of the water and starting the run. I just had to hang in the top 25. I could do this. <br />
<br />
The starting horn blew and I took off, kicking and stroking. I was close to two girls who were giving me a run for my money and paced me well throughout the swim. We stayed near each other and I used them for drafting and sighting. In the first couple of minutes I lifted my head and saw the lead pack, 50 to 100 meters ahead. Don't get discouraged Angela, just keep going. I felt nauseous from exertion just a few minutes into the swim. It was going to be a tough race. <br />
<br />
When I ran up the ramp out of the water I was told I was in 9th place. Not a bad position. But I knew my bike was my weak point. I have just not gotten out of the city enough to ride this year and I hoped my sessions on the CompuTrainer were enough to keep me from getting passed by too many girls.<br />
<br />
The first girl passed me just about a minute in. Then another about a minute later. By the time we were crossing the big bridge I had lost count of how many had overtaken me. Just keep pedaling, I told myself. You do NOT want to miss this by one spot. My mouth was dry, my stomach was churning and my legs were burning. But I kept down and gave it my all. Finally I pulled into transition and racked my bike, relieved that portion was over.<br />
<br />
I grabbed my visor and race belt and headed out onto the run. Immediately I saw Gene, Elisabeth, Tavia and Alex. "Twenty-five," they yelled. I died a little inside at that moment. I give up, I thought. There is no way I can hold off everyone behind me over the next 3 miles. I just can't do it. <br />
<br />
The negativity was fleeting, though. I decided there was no way I was going to miss this by one spot. So I found the closest girl in front of me. And I watched her and paced behind her. As I creeped closer I realized I could pass her. So I picked up the pace and just after mile one, made my move. Twenty- fourth. Phew. A cushion. And then I got passed by another girl about thirty seconds later. Back to twenty five.<br />
<br />
A few times I heard footsteps approaching behind me and I froze a little bit in fear. But then they would pass and it would be a guy and I would relax. A couple even mustered up the energy to say "Don't worry." <br />
<br />
With about one mile left I could tell I was about to overtake another female. I thought I might wait to the end and snipe her but she seemed to be fading fast so I passed her fairly quickly. A cushion again. Relief. I kid you not, I got passed by yet ANOTHER girl thirty seconds later. If this was going to be, it was going to be by the skin of my teeth. <br />
<br />
Finally I could see the finish line. I ran it in like I was being chased. Because I was. By several other girls who were racing to qualify for World Champs. And when I crossed they announced me in 25th place in my age group, the final position for Team USA. I had hoped to break 1:20 and had finished in 1:17. In 2013 it had taken a 1:24 to qualify. I ran my fastest 5K time ever at the end of a sprint triathlon. I felt like I was going to puke and cry and laugh all at the same time. It was glorious. <br />
<br />
I have been thinking about punching my ticket to the 2015 ITU Age Group World Championships for well over year. I have talked about it, dreamt about it and worked hard for it. I didn't expect it to be quite so challenging to achieve, but that just makes it all the sweeter. To represent Team USA in my hometown will hopefully be nothing short of amazing! Bring on September 2015 :)<br />

<b>FIND A NEW HOBBY- </b>I know, I know, it is hard to give up that triathlon obsession even when it is not racing season. But in the Midwest it is also hard to feed the triathlon beast in the dead of winter. Every fall, in addition to the cooler days, I look forward to college football, my fantasy team and traveling. Three things that make me excited that triathlon season is over and the next chapter of my year is about to begin. Instead of training on the weekends, I get my short workouts out of the way in the morning before football starts and the spend the day cozy at my house with my family and big screen. I always have a few trips planned for the latter half of the year, outside summer when I need to be training, and in the fall so I can look forward to them. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK (SOMETIMES)- </b>I have this rule from September- December: If life gets in the way or I REALLY don't feel like working out, I won't. Now mind you, I am addicted to working out so this usually doesn't happen more than a couple times per month, but I give in to the urge this fall season. Because it just feel so good to be lazy sometimes. The rest of the year I don't give myself that luxury, it is not even an option. I also have this game I play at home if I can't drag myself to the gym during workout time- I give myself the choice to clean one floor of my house or workout. I often do decide to clean and you know what? There is no guilt after. I made my home spic and span and actually moved my body a little doing it!</div>

<b>MIX THOSE WORKOUTS UP- </b>Sometimes I just don't feel like running, biking or swimming. But in season you still have to. This time of year you don't. So I like to lift weights, take a class, do yoga, go for a long walk or just ride my bike to 5 different client's houses to get my workout in. Taking a mental and physical break from triathlon makes it more exciting to pick up that sport again later. </div>

<b>DO WHAT YOU LOVE, ABANDON WHAT YOU DON'T- </b>For some reason I never get sick of running. I think it is the simplicity of tying your shoes and getting out the door. Swimming is fun once you get in, but after 25 years of swim training, diving into the pool can be torturous. And I am always happy to retire my bike for a while in the fall. So you know what? For the next couple months I will continue to run, sign up for a few local races, swim when I can coax myself into the water and forget about the bike. Because come January the Computrainer and I have a lot of dates, and my Computrainer does not like to be stood up. </div>

<b>SLEEP IN, EAT WHAT YOU WANT, BE LAZY- </b>Ok, that is a bit of an exaggeration but I am firm believer that you cannot be on your A game, in your best shape, at your racing weight all year round. Part of what feels good each autumn is not setting that alarm, eating some junk when I go to a football tailgate on Saturday (and not worrying how it is going to effect my Sunday workout), and laying on the couch all day Sunday watching my fantasy points (after a short workout in the morning). These are luxuries I am willing to give up all spring/summer because after a while they lose their appeal. And training and racing and giving up junk food and working out several hours a day becomes that much more appealing. Don't make the mistake of putting on more than a few lbs, but don't lose any sleep over those few lbs that will inevitably creep back on, either. Enjoy and make the most of your down time and you will be that much more motivated to train when it counts.</div>

When you compete in a sprint or Olympic distance triathlon, it is not uncommon to have a race where you feel like you totally nailed it. Your training was solid, you felt strong and fast throughout, and that confidence carries you through to the finish line. An Ironman is a totally different beast altogether. Even the fastest professionals go through cycles of high points and low points throughout the day. The trick to conquering the IM is to ride the highs as long as possible and dig yourself out of the low points quickly. Below, in a hot or not format, are some of the things that affected me throughout my race on Sunday.</div>

<b><span style="color: red;">HOT: </span></b> The weather. I mean, seriously, when was the last time you saw a cloudy, 70 degree day sandwiched between two 95 degree sunny days? That's what I thought. Never. Someone was looking out for us.</div>

<span style="color: blue;"><b>NOT:</b> </span> The wind. It was a bitch. Especially on miles 96-102. Those were definitely the worst part of the bike for me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: red;">HOT:</span> </b>The volunteers. Unbelievable. Their smiles, motivation and enthusiasm were so fantastic I almost wanted to hug each one I encountered. I accidentally threw water and/or Perform on more than one of them and they all laughed it off. To the girl in T1 who rubbed sunscreen on my back to the one in T2 who changed my socks- you all rule.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: blue;">NOT: </span></b>The triathlete who called one of the volunteers an asshole because he wouldn't give him his gear. This athlete did not have his participant bracelet or pickup ticket, which was a rule stated from the very beginning. Poor volunteer was just doing his job and this guy was giving us all a bad name. Too bad it was after the race- he should have been disqualified in my eyes.</div>

<b><span style="color: red;">HOT:</span> </b>The spectators. From the guys in the pink speedos to the tutu'd ladies to the man who looked me in the eye at mile 10 and said "You look like you are having a great race." The spectators made this race a memory to last a lifetime. Thank you for coming out.</div>

<b><span style="color: blue;">NOT: </span> </b>Miles 18-25 on the run when the sun was setting and the spectators were calling it a day. These are what I call "the dark miles." When you need to dig deep and figure out what you are made of. Reflect on how far you have come and where you are going. The pain was bad, I remember that, but already becoming a distant memory.</div>

<span style="color: red;"><b>HOT:</b> </span>A breakdown free bike ride (for me). No mechanical issues with my newish electronic shifters, no flat tires, no ejected water bottles. Nothing to throw me off my game.</div>

<b style="color: blue;">NOT: </b>The poor guy I saw looking at his bike on the side of the road with a BROKEN CHAIN. Broken chain?! Yikes! I can only hope race support was able to help him and get him back on the road.</div>

<b style="color: red;">HOT: </b>Any section of the race on State Street. There are two portions on each loop so four times altogether you get to run past the bars and the crowds and they will motivate you like none other.</div>

<span style="color: blue;"><b>NOT:</b> </span>Who decided it would be great to make miles 6 and 19 mostly uphill? And a steep one at that. Even walking at mile 19, uphill was killer. You try to tell yourself only 7 more miles but then realize that is over and hour and it is depleting.</div>

<b style="color: red;">HOT: </b>The deliciously salty goodness of the chicken broth I chugged at mile 20. I was sticking to Perform and water prior to then, but all bets were off the last 6 miles. So yummy.</div>

<span style="color: blue; font-weight: bold;">NOT: </span>The sticky sweet taste in the back of my mouth and throat for a majority of the marathon. Ten hours of Roctane, GUs, Chomps and Perform will do that to you. I am on energy supplement detox for a while. </div>

<b style="color: red;">HOT:</b> The last few hundred meters of the race with the spotlights pointed towards you, the roaring crowd and that final boost of adrenaline.</div>

<b style="color: blue;">NOT: </b>Ten minutes after the race when I realized I needed to lay down or I was going to keel over. When I laid down right there on the sidewalk my mother immediately walked me to the medical tent. I managed to avoid an IV by laying down for a bit and drinking a can of Sprite in front of the doctor.</div>

<b style="color: red;">HOT: </b>Taking a warm bath at the hotel after the race, falling into bed, and blissfully falling into a deep slumber.</div>

What a weekend. I can finally cross IMWI off my bucket list. We have attended for years and I have always known I wanted to race it, but I honestly didn't think it would happen so <a href="http://sparkmultisport.blogspot.com/2011/09/ironman-wisconsin-no-race-envy-here.html">soon</a>. What a difference a couple of years make. And how quickly the last year <a href="http://www.blogger.com/IM%20Wisconsin%20Weekend%20Recap:%20%20See%20you%20in%202013!">passed</a>.</div>

Starting about five days before the race, basically after the Labor Day weekend, I entered full IM focus mode. Which should be a good thing, but it wasn't. Thinking about the race was greatly affecting my sleep. I have never encountered anything like this before and it was horrendous. I had two nights with five hours of sleep, Thursday night I downed some Nyquil and managed eight, Friday five and the night before got ONE hour of sleep. ONE. And it was not even good sleep. It was halfway there, fitful, not very restful nap sleep. I was honestly awake at 3 am in tears wondering if I should still even race. Then the alarm went off at 4:30.</div>

I have never had so little sleep in one week in my life. Those of you who know me well know that I take my sleep very seriously. I spent many of my awake hours googling "no sleep week before Ironman." I found a lot of posts about people only getting a few hours the night before, but nothing like my succession of sleepless nights. But the human body is an absolutely amazing thing. Despite all my fears about not being able to complete the race or turning in an embarrassing time, the only place I noticed my sleepiness throughout was in my eyes. They just felt heavy.</div>

Then, there it was, race morning. I met Elisabeth in the hotel lobby at 5:15 and we headed down to drop off our Special Needs bag, headed over to stock our bikes with water bottles, pump up our tires and get body marked. Before I knew it we were wetsuiting up and heading to get into the water. At 6:45 we gave each other a teary hug, jumped in the water and made our way out to the start line. I felt unbelievably calm and overwhelmed at the same time. After a year of planning, five months of training and a night of no sleep, it was time to go.</div>

The first 500 yards of the swim was intense. I was getting clawed, kicked and swam over by men all around me. I kept thinking they should have some sympathy on the poor girl who ended up in their pack (they knew I was female by my pink cap) but to no avail. Once we hit the first turn the pack thinned a bit and I found my groove at the hip of a guy for quite some time. After the second turn we hit the long straightaway (1700 meters) that was directly into the wind and waves (waviest I had seen on Lake Monona). They were no whitecaps, like Racine, but harrowing nonetheless. I just tried to maintain a strong comfortable pace and before I knew it we were hitting the last turn. </div>

I figured the waves were going to add 4-5 minutes to my goal time of an hour so I was happy to see that I was out 1:03. I was happier later to find out that that time place me 3rd in my age group and 21st overall female. Running out I was getting some great cheers from strangers and people I knew and I just tried to enjoy every minute of it. The run to T1 up the parking ramp helix is unforgettable- totally lined with people cheering you on, while you are trying not to go to fast and wear yourself out. Once I made into the Terrace the volunteers grabbed my bag and helped me transition to my bike gear in a few minutes. </div>

And onto the bike. 112 long ass, hilly, twisty, and WINDY miles. We were blessed with cool weather on Sunday but paid for it with the 15-20 mile per hour wind from the east. So, the first 16 miles the wind was to our back and it felt fantastic. Then came the start of the first loop. The loop I have practiced on so many times this summer and know every turn and hill. I felt prepared and just tried to keep it easy for the first 25 miles or so until the first of the succession of three killer hills. </div>

I was excited about the hills- I have never cheered there but have always heard that it was lined with spectators who will keep you pumped up. I was not disappointed. I saw friends, strangers, a clown walk out of the corn, and men dressed in women's swimsuits. I was proposed too, run with, called Pinky, and creepily complimented on my pigtails by many a drunken man. It was a hoot and I hardly noticed my pain on the first loop. The second loop was a different story. </div>

Once I managed to get through the two loops I was actually still on track for my original goal of 6:30 (before they forecasted high winds) and thought I might just break it. Then I turned off to head back to the city. HOME STRETCH! Or so I thought. When I made that left turn, smack, that wind hit me like a ton of bricks. And the first few miles included rolling hills, mostly an uphill battle. With a marathon in my not so distant future I decided it was best to conserve energy, slow down and take in some calories. With the cool weather I had not made it through all my bottles of Roctane, so I ate a bag of GU chomps during that last hour, wrestled with the wind and made it back in 6:37. </div>

The bike catchers grabbed me and I hobbled into the Terrace to T2. Changed socks, put on visor, grabbed my race belt and I was outta there. Now all I had to depend on was me. I trust myself. It was a good feeling.</div>

I tried to go out very slowly knowing the IM marathon is a sneaky sucker that is going to get you no matter how hard you pace. After the first two miles under 9:00 I settled into a ten minute mile for the next 8 miles or so. I felt good and strong and finally got to exchange some words with my family and give Alex a kiss around mile 10. She asked if I was finished with my Ironman and I think I said almost. But not quite. Only the 16 hardest miles of the race left. </div>

Things were good until about mile 14 when the side ache crept in, I started getting some serious acid reflux (so weird, never had that in my life except when I was pregnant) and the blisters were killing. At mile ten I had promised my family I was going to beat my Arizona time of 12:53, and come hell or high water, I was getting it done. I needed to keep those mile under 12 minutes and I only allowed myself to walk every other aid station and these two crazy hill that would fry your legs so bad they were not even worth the effort. I managed to keep most miles under 11 and with 3 miles to go I knew it was going to happen. </div>

Miles 23-25.5 are long, dark and sparse of spectators. So close, yet so far away. Then you hit State Street and that is what this race is all about. Music bumping, beer flowing the crowd shouting you up the hill towards the capitol. I teared up a little turning that corner. It had been a long week and I had my moments doubting whether I would make it here or not. I looked around, picked up my turnover a bit and soaked it all in. </div>

The final turn when you see the finish line is so wonderful. After 12 hrs and 44 minutes it finally felt good again to move forward and you almost want that moment to last forever. ALMOST. Because crossing that finish line and falling into a catchers arms and letting your legs stop moving actually feels better. They hang that medal over your neck, give you your finisher gear and regale you with praise. Your fans are yelling at you from the side and Mike Reilly has just announced that you are an Ironman. For those of you think I'm insane (its ok, I am not offended), this is one of the biggest reasons I do this. For the moment when I become an Ironman.<br />
